MR is a couples' retreat based on Scripture and the Trinity. Fr. Gabriel Calvo, a Spanish priest, founded both Marriage Encounter and Marriage Retomo in response to requests from Spanish couples who wished to deepen their marriage commitment. MR is ha ve been held all over the world in many languages. Through the years, more than 200 couples, priests and religious have participated in the MR process hosted by a team from this archdiocese. Couples, and those ministering to them, have found MR to be one of the ways to assist or be assisted to attain true growth in "coupleness". It is probably the best gift we have given to each other. We are actively involved and busy with the demands o f a hectic and frenetic lifestyle. We have decided that we probably thrive on this as we do nothing to change it. However, periodically we need to take time out. We must acknowledge that spending a weekend together where we dedicate ourselves to commun icating more effectively, deepening our awareness of God's presence in our lives, and responding in gratitude to God for the many gifts He has given us increases our sense of oneness and strengthens us to persevere in attaining our goal of helping each ot her gain eternal life. There is a need for all of us to keep growing and respond to our natural human curiosity. Otherwise, we end up burnt out or depressed. Adult spiritual growth is one answer to this need. When we are learning, there is an excitement and vitality in our lives. Today's world has many areas where we need to fill the gaps. Marriage and family life is certainly one of the areas where support, nurturing and sustenance are necessary. There is a poverty in our families that must be eliminated. One method of help is to admit that we cannot meet all of these needs on our own. There are many problems that scream for attention and solutions. Many years ago a friend told us "There is no solution, seek it lovingly." We have to be willing to turn our needs and diffic ulties over to God who loves us. He helps us find the loving way to meet the demands in our lives. When we hand our concerns to God because we don't have the means to resolve them, He provides the ability to seek an appropriate solution or the courage to accept the situation. MR is one of the ways that has helped us to take the time to continue getting to know each other better and inviting God into our "coupleness". A favorite Scripture passage is "When God is for us, who can be against us?" With His presence in our lives, we can and do succeed in maintaining our priority of marriage commitment. It is only possible with His help. An MR weekend helps us put all the concerns and anxieties of our lives into their appropriate places and perspective. B eing truly together in outlook and spirit is enhanced by our prayer and witness to God's ever-present care for us. Couples, we invite you to treat yourselves to the best, most meaningful present with which you can gift each other. Spend a weekend inviting God more deeply into your relationship and make a Marriage Retomo. Contact Mike & Maureen Oates, 319-268-0202 for more information.
